Erik is beginning to realize that his fake marriage plan might not have an exit strategy. While not exactly autobiographical, this situation has a bit of a parallel to something that happened to me. When I was in school, I was very shy around girls, and when I say shy, I mean, terrorized by them. One time, I was at the town fair with one of my very beautiful cousins and noticed a friend from school was looking at us. I immediately held my cousin's hand and walked with her to the spooky house, right in front of my friend. He made sure to spread the rumor in school that I had a girlfriend and that she was gorgeous. That saved me the stress of having to go after girls until I was ready, which didn't happen until a few years later.
