It's a platypus... It doesn't do much

I had this idea many years ago when I learned that platypuses (platypii?) are mammals with palmeate hands, duck bills, a poisonous sting and lay eggs!
It was obvious to me that the platipus was either a mistake, or a joke. Of course, being created out of left-over parts is as good an explanation as any, right?
